This sounds like a job for the Mythbusters!

According to the following Wired News story, people should not use mobile phones outdoors during thunderstorms because of the risk of being struck by lightning.

I don’t doubt that this story is true, but I find it surprising that this is the first we’ve heard of it. I predict that we will see this tested on Mythbusters soon.
